BHC: Political power is shameless
21 December 2011
Ruling majority and ‘opposition’ unabashedly bought and sold the future of the court and our right to justice, appointing nondescript and despicable persons to control judges by means of the Supreme Judicial Council Inspectorate’s disciplinary powers. Neither the free Bulgarian media, nor the judges faithful to the people, nor the civil rights defenders, nor even the European Commission perturbed the miry lack of consciousness of the MPs who represent nothing but their own inanimate deals for lawlessness.
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee considers that by Parliament’s obscene act of bankruptcy yesterday – the appointment of provenly crooked individuals to the Supreme Judicial Council Inspectorate, the present state utterly disowned itself as concerns its claim to be based on the rule of law. This is not a rule of law state, but a wrong one. Unfortunately, not only the ruling party are aggressors of legality. The ‘opposition’ cooperates with them when it comes to controlling justice.
Without exaggeration, the public are sick with a ‘legal’ commission and a ‘national’ assembly that appoint ‘inspectors’, such as the current heads of the Supreme Judicial Council’s ethical degradation.
And yet. In Bulgaria, there are true journalists. There are judges. There are rights defenders. Power is in its own trap.
