European Commission Slams Dutch Anti-Immigration Site

The website launched by Dutch rightist Freedom Party led by controversial Geert Wilders was condemned by EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding.

"The website is an open call to intolerance," said Reding as reported by the Irish Times.

"In Europe we support freedom. We solve our problems by showing more solidarity, not by telling tales on fellow citizens," said Reding in what the Times describes as a scathing statement.

The Freedom Party site, titled "Complaints about Central and Eastern Europeans," boasts slogans such as "Do you have problems with people from Central and Eastern Europe?" and "Have you lost your job because of a Pole, a Bulgarian, a Romanian? We want to know." It also displays media headlines reporting how Eastern Europeans commit more and more crime.

Bulgarian, Polish and Romanian authorities have already expressed their outrage at the site and its contents, but Dutch PM Mark Rutte, to whom Wilders is an important coalition partner, has this far failed to criticize it.

Commissioner Reding's denouncement however met with a rebutal from Wilders, who argued that since the site has already received "32,000 complaints" based on "facts," any talk of tales and discrimination is irrelevant.
