Bulgarian Helsinki Committee questions the Ministry of Interior regarding the case of obituaries of Hitler placed at the entrance of the Synagogue
Regarding the scandalous incident with obituaries featuring the image of Adolf Hitler posted at the Sofia Synagogue, the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee has sent a written inquiry to the director of the Sofia Directorate of Internal Affairs. On January 6, 2024 (Saturday), unknown individuals affixed obituaries at the entrance of the Jewish temple to commemorate the anniversary of the death of the German dictator. The obituaries describe Hitler as a great leader with a remarkable spiritual presence. The text announces a memorial service scheduled to take place at the Jewish Cemetery and concludes with the Nazi salute "Heil Hitler."
The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee characterizes this act as an unprecedented, audacious anti-Semitic provocation that violates the fundamental human rights of the representatives of the Jewish community in Bulgaria and constitutes a serious disruption of public order.
The committee has requested information from the Ministry of Interior about the actions taken by the authorities to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Additionally, they inquired whether the Ministry of Interior has implemented measures to secure the Sofia Synagogue and prevent similar actions.
