The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee is part of a project aimed at protecting freedom of expression
The European Implementation Network is launching a project in support of freedom of expression in Europe. The project is implemented in collaboration with partners from non-governmental organizations across Europe, including the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee.
The innovative initiative aims to protect and uphold freedom of expression by supporting the effective implementation of key decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the member states of the Council of Europe.
The project focuses on addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by certain European countries, where violations of freedom of speech are recognized as a threat to democratic principles in society.
These challenges include issues such as draconian defamation laws that compel journalists to silence established problems, the undue influence of state or state-related entities on media freedom, and the alarming increase in violence against reporters.
The project aims to strengthen the engagement of civil society in the process of implementing ECHR decisions by providing training, resources, mentorship, and comprehensive support to the non-governmental organizations involved, helping them overcome these challenges.
Freedom of speech is a prerequisite for the development of society, and the exchange of ideas and opinions secures vitality and fosters the democratic culture of the community.
The European Implementation Network collaborates with members and partners – lawyers, civil society organizations, and communities – from the entire region of the Council of Europe to advocate for the full and timely implementation of decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.
