Throughout 2002, Bulgaria was governed by the coalition government of the National Movement Simeon II, led by the former Bulgarian monarch Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the political party supported by the majority of Bulgarian Turks, some Bulgarian-speaking Muslims, and part of the Roma community. In January 2002, Mr. Georgi Parvanov, elected in November 2001 as the candidate of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, was sworn in as President.
