In 2012, some positive changes were made in legislation and practice related to human rights. However, the situation worsened in several areas. This particularly affected the independence of the judiciary, the right to freedom of expression, the right to religious freedom for Muslims, and conditions in places of detention. As in previous years, serious problems persisted with the excessive use of force by law enforcement authorities, the right to asylum, and discrimination against certain ethnic minorities and individuals with diverse sexual orientations.
