Throughout 2015, Bulgaria was governed by a coalition government of the Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB), which won the most votes in the October 2014 elections; the Reformist Bloc (RB), consisting of several small center-right parties; Alternative for Bulgarian Revival (ABV), a small splinter group from the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP); and the Patriotic Front (PF), a coalition of several parties in which two ultra-nationalist, neo-totalitarian parties play a central role — the National Front for the Salvation of Bulgaria (NFSB) and the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Bulgarian National Movement (IMRO-BND). PF entered parliament with a program and political rhetoric dominated by racist, xenophobic, and Islamophobic messages, which it continued to promote throughout the year. The Front exerted pressure to adopt restrictive legislative and administrative measures in various areas, particularly in minority policy and migration policy.
